Contrary to reports playing down any interest, Wolves are still tracking Swindon Town star Yaser Kasim, though an offer has not yet materialised.
Our man Paul Suart caught up with Andrew Steel-Davis of FLIC Wiltshire, to get an insight into the hard-hitting midfielder.
Who is he?
Born in the Karrada district of Baghdad, Kasim’s talent shone through as he played among friends on the streets of the war-torn country.
He was spotted by scouts from Tottenham and was drafted into the London club’s youth set-up in 2007, aged 16.
Three years later Kasim joined Brighton on a short-term contract that was extended to the end of the 2010/11 season.
Marcus Tudgay contests the ball with Swindon Town's Yaser Kasim Kasim made his senior debut against Notts County in May 2011, but only played once the following year before being loaned to non-league Luton Town.
He established himself as a regular at Luton, making 11 appearances and scoring once, and then joined Macclesfield Town on a one-month loan in February 2013.
The 24-year-old made five appearances in the centre of the Macclesfield midfield before returning to Brighton who released him in May 2013.
VIEW GALLERY After impressing during a trial, Kasim joined Swindon Town on a three-year
deal in August 2013.
He played 45 games in his first season, scoring twice.
Kasim started the following campaign as a first choice midfielder and on August 30, 2014, became the first Iraqi to captain a professional English team.
A tough-tackling midfielder, Kasim helped guide Town into the League One play-off final last month, playing in all three play-off matches.
He scored three goals in 41 games, yet missed part of the season while on international duty with Iraq at the Asian Cup.
Swindon Town's Yaser Kasim tests the Coventry wall Kasim was nominated for most valuable player at the Asian Cup, as Iraq finished fourth, but lost out to Swindon teammate Massimo Luongo who lifted the trophy with Australia.
What are his qualities?
Having watched him week in week out for Swindon, Mr Steel-Davis believes he has many.
He said: “I always remember seeing a slightly overweight, stocky kid who looked out of place on a football pitch when he turned out for a pre-season match.
“I did not think much to him at the time, but he’s improved dramatically and was very influential for Swindon last season.
“He’s got an eye for a pass, short and long,
“Some of the stuff he does on the ball is incredible and with such elegance and authority.
“He loves a tackle and never shies away from anything.
Reda Johnson and Swindon Town's Yaser Kasim “He’s got everything in his game so I would not be surprised if there’s a fair amount of interest in him.”
Where does he play?
“He would probably suit Wolves’ style of play, the way he operates,” Steel-Davis added.
“He’s very much a holding midfielder who dictates the tempo of games.”
As technically gifted as Kasim is, he’s not afraid to put in a challenge which is perhaps what Wolves have been missing in the middle.
His no-nonsense approach is perhaps reflected in his caution count which crept up to 15 last term for club and country, for whom he has now won 14 full caps.
What’s he like as a person?
Having grown up in Baghdad, as bombs rained down at the height of the war, Kasim has the make-up to appreciate everything football offers him.
Oldham Athletic's Carl Winchester battles with Swindon's Yaser Kasim There’s no egos here, merely a footballer who wants to be the best he can be which will inevitably endear him to Kenny Jackett.
He speaks fluent English and is known to be outspoken at times without being confrontational.
How does Jackett know him?
Jackett has an encyclopaedic knowledge of the lower leagues and what he doesn’t know, his team of scouts does.
Wolves were at one point linked with a move for Luongo so Kasim may well have stood out when the scouts were watching.
What are Wolves’ chances of signing him?
Put it this way, he’s a realistic target.
Having lost out to Preston in the League One play-off final, Swindon boss Mark Cooper is resigned to losing his star turns.
Sheffield United's Paul Cotts (centre) takes on Swindon Town's Massimo Luongo (left) and Yaser Kasim Luongo has already been snapped up by Queens Park Rangers, despite interest from Villa, and keeper Wes Foderingham looks bound for Blues.
Kasim has one year left on his contract so Swindon might want to cash in while they can.
He joined on a free transfer, but Swindon will still want as big a fee as possible as Cooper looks to rebuild his squad.
Valued at between £800,000 and £1.2million, Kasim is certainly in Wolves’ price range.
