The Development Of Pip's Character in Great Expectations by Charles dicken
Philip Pirrip in the novel Great Expectations by Charles dickens Is the major character in which the events of the novel revolves around him he is known as Pip. This novel like the novel of bildungsroman in which the actions revolve around the development of Pip from childhood to adulthood to the final state which is maturity .The author Charles Dickens in this novel showed the story of of a young boy called Pip who realizes his identity as he strives to be above his social class, pip's personality traits change through interaction with other people in the course of the story .
The beginning of the tale offer us a great events to know pip's personality .the author displays first how pip have no memory of his family ,he just can remember the appearance of his mother and father .this suggests that pip has good imagination although he was little boy .pip lived with his sister Mrs Joe ,but through out the story Mrs Joe acted as pip's mother , she was strict and raise pip up by hands because of that his relationship with Joe the blacksmith was much stronger than his relation with Mrs joe , so he was influenced strongly by joe than his sister .even we notice that his sister had more control Over pip's personality in the novel. The turning point in pip's life come after his first to satis house ,she trated him and his uncle pumblechook with scorn .pip's first impression about herthat she was wery proud also relying on the fact that she called him boy ,and this was the first time pip was treated so .the same thing happened to him when he met for the first time the beautiful girl Estella ,pip falls in love with her as they were playing cards she was laughing at his hands and his thick boots ,this was also a turning point in pip's life and an important stage or line that shows pip's eagerness to take the first step of changing his uncommon ways as he said "Her contempt for me was so strong, that it became infectious, and I caught it." . the change that pip adopted in the novel was influenced mostly because of two characters Estella and Miss Havisham in which he had a strong desire to impress Estella ,Miss Havisham who was trying to break pip's heart using Estella as a tool . Although pip has a strong desire for better change in his life he was changing for worse at the beginning because he was not aware of this change yet .as we can see also throughout the course of the novel that Herbert had a great influence on pip's character by making pip realizes that getting a gentleman is not just about being unpleasant and treating lower class with contempt as pip had experienced to some extent from Estella and Miss Havisham ,Herbert also helped changing pip's character by invoking generosity and manners .
Love and friendship was pip's relationship with joe ,but when he brought joe to satis house to meet with Miss Havisham ,pip gets ashamed of joe's behaviors because it was an embarrassment for pip .pip saw this as a reminder of who he was and the place he came from . it was bad thing for pip to be ashamed of joe because he would not have any change before visiting Satis house .
Things began to change for pip When he and joe met Mr Jaggers who come for business to tell pip of his great expectations, people who treated pip in un respectful way , they show respect and rained him with praises, such as uncle Pumblechook .
After going to London, pip meet his old friend Herbert then they became friends .pip wants Herbert to help him to be more gently .Herbert started to help pip improving his table manner, so Herbert's influence on pip was helpful for teaching him respect and politeness. then and after that pip meets with Estella after she came back from France .He was fascinated by her beauty and tranquility , unfortunately pip thought that Estella would accept him after changing
many things for her ,he found that Estella still does not care about him ,at this moment Estella's influence on pip increased as he is trying to get her interest and love .later on ,pip started to comment about the impact of his upon him and also confessing that he understood "it was not all good "he also felt guilty for ignoring joe and Biddy also for humiliating Hebert by leading him to debt . At this point pip's character has taken a decent for the wealth and social status he achieved and become scornful to the people he loved so much ,Joe Biddy . Pip's carelessness toward Joe and Biddy and his influence on Herbert led him to debt , all happened because of one thing which is pip's desire to impress Estella .
Another evidence for pip's character development and becoming more humble ,is that he starts receiving income from his benefactor ,also adopted helping Herbert's problem by finding a partner and secretly pip bought the partnership for Herbert . we can see that he has become lawfully as well matured and being compassionate with other people whom he loved and were friends for him . pip finds that Magwitch was his benefactor not Miss Havisham .at first pip felt embarrassed that his ambition to social discrepancy was supported by a low class criminal .which lead to contempt in pip's character again ,but this feeling soon changed .
Pip made his mind up to take the criminal to a place where he can hide him from Compey son and police men . he took an ethical step by stop using the criminal’s money .so the deeds that Pip did demonstrate his great gentleness and courtesy in his character .as the story carry on his dotting and affection goes larger but not out of selfishness , it was out of honest feelings.
Pip comes to Satis house to to see Miss Havisham ,she saw how broken Pip’s heart is and showed regret and pleads for forgiveness, saying that she did that deliberately and led him to believe she was his benefactor .
Pip goes to Satis house to visit Miss Havisham, she sees how brocken roken Pip's heart is and shows remorse and begs for forgiveness, claiming that she intentionally led Pip to believe she was his benefactor.
Walking in the garden Pip can't help thinking of the morbid spectacle of Miss Havisham hanging from the brewery that he a fantasized about as a child. As he looks in on Miss Havisham, he witnesses an accident involving the fireplace and he rushes to her aid, badly burning his hands and arm.
Pips actions are very noble, he had a right to be very angry with Miss Havisham, but his selfless acts saved her life.
On receiving an anonymous note calling him back to the marshes, Pip returns to hear that Pumblechook was taking all the credit for Pip's rise into high society. Pip bears it without saying a word. Thinking instead of Joe and Biddy and thinking again of the neglect that he had given Joe. "My heart was deeply and most deservedly humbled." This humility shows a noble side of Pip's character and the reader is lead to notice how Pip's character, having reached it's peak of contempt, is beginning to improve.
Pips nasty encounter with Orlick leaves him in a life-threatening situation, but he remains bold and when Orlick explains that it was Pip's fault that he had killed Mrs Joe, he replies, "It was you, you villain!" but inside he feels a rush of guilt. Again we are seeing humility in Pips character and I think that the biggest influence of this is the memory of Joe. Joe's character was so strong and honest that it remained with Pip throughout the story. When Pip neglected Joe, the influence died, but as he thinks more and more of him, Joe's influence reappears.
As the plan to smuggle Magwitch away goes into action, the reader can clearly see the contrast between the present Pip, and the Pip of the past, Once an uneasy, hesitant child, now a confident adult guiding the once terrifying Magwitch to freedom.
Magwitch's injuries are crippling and he is sentenced death for his crimes but Pip's new found love of Magwitch drives him to stay by his side until the last. Pip eases his final moments by telling Magwitch of his long lost daughter Estella, causing him to die happy.
Pip's gratitude and love of Joe resurfaces when struck helpless by fever and landed in considerable debt, Joe comes to his aid and nurtures him throughout the illness and pays off his debts.
Throughout the novel Pip's character under goes a contrasting change form a weak and scared little boy to a powerful and confident young man. When he met Estella he yearned to become rich to gain her acceptance, but as he found out, power and wealth do not bring happiness and he was forced to humbly change his ways.
" This demonstrates that Pip's character is becoming more self conscious and he has a desire not to be associated with his lower class background. Not only does he want to seem gentlemanly to Estella, but to everyone who he meets.
