Countable and Uncountable
Note : A noun can be countable or uncountable
Q) Define a countable nouns?
Countable nouns are things we can count it.
Note : A countable nouns can be "Singular" or "Plural"
For Example :
- Singular {Apple}
- Plural {Apples}
Note : Most countable nouns become plural by adding (s) at the end of the word.
For example:
- Chair = Chairs
- Student = Students
Q) Define an uncountable nouns .
A) An uncountable nouns are words which cannot be counted. Therefore, They only have a singular form. They have no plural form. These words are thought of as wholes rather than as part. They usually refer to abstractions. (Such as confidence or advice) or collectives (Such as equipment or luggage)
For example [ money / furniture / information]
Q) How to use a countable and an uncountable nouns?
A) When using a countable or an uncountable nouns, Pay attention to articles and adjective ! some articles and adjectives can be used with both countable and uncountable nouns. However, others can be used with only countable pr only uncountable nouns .
Note : We use [ a few / many] with countable nouns.
1- Many : we use it before a plural countable nouns. In [Affirmative, Question and Negative]
Example : many cups / many books ...
2- A few : we use it to express positive idea with plural nouns. It means a small number.
Example : A few students / a few people ...
Note : We use [ much / a little] with uncountable nouns.
1- Much : we use it before uncountable nouns.
2- A little : we use it to express positive idea with uncountable nouns . It means " a small amount"
Note : When we say " a little or a few " we means a small amount.
Note : " Little and few " without "a" are more negative idea.
Little : means " not much " or " almost no "
Few : means " not many " or " almost no"
Examples :
- There is little work to do. [almost no work to do]
- The exam is extremely difficult and few students passed it. [almost no students]
Note : "some and any" are used before pluarl nouns and uncountable nouns to talk about an indefinite quontity.
* Some : is used in questions when we want to encourage people to say "yes" for example [ requests and offers ]
Examples:
- Can you let me have some paper?
- Have you got some paper I could have, please?
* Any : is used in negative and question form.
Example : I don`t have any new stories in your stores.
Note : Any is used after words with negative meaning such as without [never / seldom / rarely / hardly]
