    Weak & Strong Forms
    in English
    Prepared by:

    Weak & Strong Forms
A word in English is either lexical ( content word ) like nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs,…etc., or grammatical
( function word ) like pronouns, articles, prepositions, auxiliary verbs…
-Most grammatical words have two pronunciations
    ( strong & weak)
    e.g:
    Weak form Strong form word
    / ət / / æt / at
    / ðət / / ðæt / that
    / fə/ / fɔː / for
    /dəz / / dʌz / does

The strong form is used in few cases:
    a. At the end of the sentence:
    e.g: what's that for? / fɔː / not / fə /

    b. To make contrast:
e.g: The letters from him not to him
    tuː frɒm
    c. For emphasis:
    e.g: you must go now
    mʌst
    d. When a weak form is being cited or quoted
e.g: you shouldn't put "and" at the end of the sentence.
/ juː ʃʊdnt pʊt "ænd" æt ði ɛnd ɒv ðə ˈsɛntəns/.

However, the weak form is used as much as possible in rapid speech because it is easier to pronounce and needs less effort.

-The following are the words with their strong & weak forms in addition to examples:
