You Can Dish It But You Can’t Take It!
This is an awesome phrase in spoken English.
If someone can “dish it” it means that they often say very direct things that could offend other people and/or hurt their feelings. A lot of people have no problem saying these kinds of things. It’s easy to criticize other people freely. That is “dishing it“.
If you can “take it” it means that you can easily handle criticism. It means that you aren’t a sensitive baby when someone says something bad about you or criticizes you.
So, if you “can dish it but can’t take it” it means that you often and can easily criticize others but you have a hard time accepting criticism. It’s not a good quality but I’m sure you can think of many people who could be described by this sentence.
